NCHS Living in Coweta Lecture Series w/ Duke Blackburn

Date: Nov 19, 2019
The final lecture series of Newnan-Coweta Historical Society's 2019 Lecture Series will feature Duke Blackburn - a fifth generation member of the RD Cole family. Mr. Blackburn is the grandson of Bryan Blackburn and Ruth Cole. He is a Newnan-native and had a career in law enforcement. Blackburn will recount the history of the company (starting in 1854), its continued prosperity for over 100 years, and the impact the company had on the county and the country.

The RD Cole Manufacturing company is said to have touched nearly every home in Newnan as they were a sawmill, window and decorative trim company and boiler maker. They were chosen as the contractor for the 1904 courthouse due to their lumber business and extensive knowledge of metal fabrication.

Joining Blackburn as a featured guest is Tom Camp, former president of the Historical Society, lawyer, and historian of many things Coweta.

At the lecture, we will also reveal a recent restoration project - the refurbishment of the RD Cole steam whistle, which blew six times a day for many years and could be heard as far off as Roscoe. The restoration work was done by Bert Gould of BD Services of Coweta.

Please join us for the lecture series at the The Historic Train Depot, 30 East Broad Street at 6pm when the doors open. The speaker will begin at 6:30pm. Light refreshments will be served.
