History of the Building

26 West Court Square is home to Piedmont Newnan Fitness, which is a full fitness facility open to the community. Before the fitness center opening, 26 W Court Square had a long history as the Johnson Hardware Store. The earliest documentation of 26 W Court Square was in 1876, with Johnson Hardware being the tenant and staying in the building for the next 114 years. Brothers G. R and R. A Johnson opened the hardware store and ran it for 38 years, which it then switched ownership to Norman Sharp, who sold it to Joe Hollis Sr. in 1916. During the 1940s, the upstairs of the building had a toy department and offices upstairs. In 1951, Edgar Hollis took over the lumber division and Joe Hollis Jr. took over the hardware store in 1959. In 1961, Johnson Hardware needed a renovation, so the building was torn down and rebuilt to what the current building is today. While it was torn down, Johnson Hardware conducted their business out of their warehouse a few streets down. In 1990s, the space was sold to Newnan Hospital and was changed to Newnan Fitness, which is run by Colleen Mooney and is also the current business in the building.
